Abstract
This paper investigates the concept of architectural identity.
Observations obtained during the development of the Institutional Continuity Architecture indicate that multiple distinct artifacts may represent the same architecture.
The objective is to characterize the properties preserved across derivation.
1. Motivation
Engineering commonly identifies systems through their implementations.
The ICA suggests that architectural identity exists independently of implementation.
Accordingly, two distinct artifacts may possess identical architectural identity.
2. Observation
The Brazil Implementation Profile introduces substantial legal information without altering constitutional meaning.
This suggests that implementation and identity are distinct concepts.
3. Working Definition
Architectural identity is the collection of properties preserved across all valid derivations of an architecture.
The definition remains provisional.
4. Candidate Invariants
Potential architectural invariants include:
- semantic intent;
- dependency structure;
- constitutional hierarchy;
- derivation admissibility;
- traceability.
Whether this list is complete remains unknown.
5. Identity versus Equality
Two artifacts need not be identical.
They may instead be architecturally equivalent.
