The validation program for Derivable Architectures is active. The cases below represent domains where the methodology has been applied, is being tested, or appears structurally compatible based on the evidence gathered so far.

We frame these honestly: some are confirmed, some are hypotheses, and some are open questions. We are not selling a universal framework. We are investigating a phenomenon and building evidence.


Confirmed

Institutional and legal systems

The methodology originated from the development of a constitutional architecture for institutional design spanning multiple legal jurisdictions. It produced the observation that a stable constitutional layer can generate jurisdiction-specific artifacts through constrained derivation, without the constitutional layer needing to change. This was the founding experimental artifact of the research program.

Software system architecture

MyNumber.is, a canonical number registry system, was designed entirely using DA methodology. Its architecture — from abstract capabilities to concrete service implementations — was derived in steps, with each step authorized by the level above it. A knowledge graph preserves full traceability across all derivation decisions. This is the most detailed application of the methodology to date.


Under active investigation

Biological systems

The first independent validation study applied DA concepts to the relationship between DNA and the cell. The structural parallel — a stable molecular specification generating constrained biological realizations — was the subject of Paper 001 in the validation series. The study is complete.

Computer networking

TCP/IP is a compelling candidate: a formal specification, multiple independent implementations, and decades of operational evidence. Paper 002 is the next study in the validation series.

Operating systems

The Linux kernel — a large, long-lived system with a stable architectural core and a vast implementation surface — is planned as Paper 003.


Open questions

Constitutional and governance systems

Can a national constitution be treated as a derivable architecture? Do legislative acts, regulations, and judicial decisions behave as derivations in the DA sense? This is Paper 004 in the validation roadmap, and the answer is genuinely unknown.

Formal mathematics

The relationship between Euclidean axioms and derived theorems has structural similarities to architectural derivation. Whether the formal DA concepts apply here, or whether the similarity is superficial, is an open question worth investigating.

Relational databases

Schema-to-instance relationships are a natural candidate. Whether the derivation properties hold in the DA sense, or whether this reduces to well-understood type theory, remains to be determined.

Organizational design

Some organizations appear to derive their operational procedures from a stable constitutional core in a way that resembles DA behavior. This is speculative and has not been formally studied.


What this means for potential clients

If you are responsible for a system — software, institutional, or otherwise — that has grown difficult to govern, audit, or evolve consistently, DA may offer a structured way to approach that problem. We do not claim it will solve every case. We do claim that the methodology is grounded, the evidence is growing, and the conversation is worth having.
