Abstract
The Institutional Continuity Architecture (ICA) was originally developed as a constitutional architecture for institutional design and jurisdictional derivation.
During its construction, an unexpected architectural phenomenon emerged.
Rather than appearing as a domain-specific framework for corporate law, ICA exhibited structural properties suggesting the existence of a broader class of systems whose concrete realizations can be systematically derived from a stable abstract architecture.
This document establishes a research program to investigate that hypothesis.
The ICA is treated as an experimental artifact—not as a theory.
The objective is to determine whether the architectural principles discovered during its construction generalize beyond the original problem domain.
No modifications to the ICA are proposed.
Evidence
This research is grounded in the completed development of an engineering project consisting of:
- ICA Baseline 2.0
- Brazil Implementation Profile v1.0
Together, these comprise approximately N constitutional and implementation artifacts developed through an explicit architectural derivation process.
The architecture was developed to solve a practical engineering problem in institutional design rather than to investigate a general architectural theory.
During its construction, a number of unexpected structural properties consistently emerged.
The present research program investigates those observed properties to determine whether they characterize a broader class of systems, referred to herein as Derivable Architectures.
Accordingly, the ICA is treated as the first experimental artifact of the investigation rather than as the theory itself.
No attempt has been made to redesign the ICA in light of the emerging hypotheses. The experimental artifact is considered fixed throughout this research program.
1. Motivation
Engineering disciplines frequently distinguish between:
- specification and implementation;
- interface and realization;
- architecture and deployment.
However, the ICA suggests a stronger separation:
a stable architecture may generate multiple valid realizations through formally constrained derivation while preserving architectural identity.
If this observation is correct, ICA may represent the first documented instance of a broader architectural class.
This research program investigates that possibility.
2. Research Strategy
The investigation proceeds empirically.
The ICA Baseline 2.0 and the Brazil Implementation Profile are considered completed experiments.
Their construction serves as observational evidence.
The research does not begin by proposing a theory.
Instead, it attempts to explain observed architectural behavior.
3. Methodological Principles
The research shall distinguish four categories of statements.
3.1 Observations
Statements directly supported by the ICA.
Example:
- Constitutional documents remain unchanged while jurisdiction-specific legal artifacts are derived.
3.2 Derived Conclusions
Logical consequences of observations.
Example:
- Architectural stability does not require implementation stability.
3.3 Conjectures
Generalizations not yet experimentally verified.
Example:
- Similar derivation mechanisms may exist outside corporate law.
3.4 Open Questions
Questions whose answers remain unknown.
Example:
- Under what conditions does derivation preserve architectural identity?
4. Initial Observations from ICA
The following properties were repeatedly observed during ICA development.

A stable constitutional layer exists independently of legal implementation.

Multiple implementation profiles may coexist simultaneously.

These observations constitute empirical evidence rather than theoretical claims.
5. Initial Research Hypothesis
Hypothesis H1:
There exists a class of architectures whose concrete artifacts are derivable from a stable abstract architecture through semantics-preserving transformations.
The remainder of this research program investigates H1.
6. Research Questions
The initial investigation centers on the following questions.

7. Scope
The research initially considers evidence from:
- ICA Baseline 2.0
- Brazil Implementation Profile v1.0
Additional domains may later be investigated, including:
- software engineering;
- constitutional systems;
- systems engineering;
- knowledge representation;
- organizational design.
No assumption is made that the theory applies to those domains.
They are considered potential future validation cases.
8. Expected Outcomes
The research aims to produce:
- a formal vocabulary;
- mathematical notation;
- derivation rules;
- correctness criteria;
- historical model;
- algebra of architectural transformations;
- criteria for identifying derivable architectures.

10. Research Philosophy
The objective is not to elevate the ICA into a universal theory.
Instead, the objective is to determine whether the architectural phenomena observed during its construction reveal a previously unrecognized class of systems.
If the hypothesis is rejected, the ICA remains a successful domain-specific architecture.
If the hypothesis survives continued investigation, the resulting theory should emerge from evidence rather than design.
