The problem

Can the minimum architecture required for persistent multi-individual coexistence and coordination be discovered rather than designed — without presupposing familiar social, legal, political, economic, or institutional structures?


What we started with

The following 52 observations were provided as source material. They describe individuals, their environment, their senses, emotions, communication, coordination, and reproduction. They are informal, occasionally redundant, and deliberately unprioritized.

  1. There is an environment in which individuals exist.
  2. Individuals have sensors to interact with this environment.
  3. Sensory information is processed through a neural network.
  4. Sensory information can produce emotions.
  5. There are many (orthogonal?) dimensions of emotions.
  6. Some emotions belong to the same dimension and act as opposite to each other.
  7. Pleasure and pain can be two opposite emotions.
  8. Individuals are complex objects that interact with the environment.
  9. Individuals need matter and energy from the environment to maintain their body integrity.
  10. Individual body integrity can be lost in many levels and may lead to destruction, in the last level, or pain, in the first ones.
  11. Individual bodies are constructed from increasing complex organization levels of cells storing the same information set.
  12. Individuals share their environment with other species of individuals and can interact with them.
  13. Human individuals form their own species which can process sensory information in many human languages.
  14. Human languages can vary with environmental location and between individual groups.
  15. Human individuals can interact with other human individuals.
  16. Human interaction can produce emotions.
  17. Human interactions can affect human body integrity.
  18. Individuals may need to interact with the environment or with other individuals to keep body integrity.
  19. Some species can store sensory data in memory.
  20. Memory information can lead to emotions in the same way as sensory information does.
  21. Individuals can change the environment in a way that other individuals of their own, and of other species, can perceive through their sensors.
  22. Communication between individuals can happen through a developed structured language.
  23. Individuals can share, through a structured language, information.
  24. With enough language complexity, individuals may be able to communicate complex information, like emotions, with other individuals.
  25. Individuals may develop ways to organize their actions in the shared environment with other individuals.
  26. Individuals may recognize patterns in the environment.
  27. Individuals may store those patterns in memory.
  28. Individuals may translate those patterns into language structures.
  29. Individuals may learn, or be able to, represent environmental patterns as symbols.
  30. Individuals may develop ways to change their environment in order to register their language through common symbols.
  31. A structured language may be constructed from these common symbols.
  32. Individuals may recognize and learn patterns of changes in the environment.
  33. Individuals may reconstruct sensory information from current sensor data and from memory data in their minds.
  34. Individuals have the capability of observing their minds.
  35. Individuals have the capability to drive their minds.
  36. Some individual species have the capability to change their body configuration to interact with the environment.
  37. Individuals may experience pleasure when near another object, and pain when further from it, or vice-versa.
  38. Some objects from the environment extend the individual capabilities to interact with the environment.
  39. Individuals can be a source of energy and matter for other individuals.
  40. An individual may reconstruct another individual’s perception of the environment in their mind.
  41. Individual species may express themselves in the shared environment in different genres, each one being responsible for a different set of capabilities.
  42. Individual bodies from the same species may be different from each other, being able to accommodate different sets of properties and capabilities as long as they are recognizable by another individual of the same species.
  43. Different genres of the same species can interact to produce another individual.
  44. Individuals may develop interaction rules to govern their interaction with other individuals, of the same and of other species.
  45. Individuals may deliberately change their body configuration in a way to move their position in the environment.
  46. Individuals may change their body configuration to keep objects attached to parts of their bodies.
  47. Individuals may use objects to avoid serving as sources of energy and matter to other individuals.
  48. Individuals may use objects to reduce other individuals’ body integrity and use them as sources of matter and energy for themselves.
  49. Individuals may use objects, or their own bodies, to protect other individuals.
  50. Individuals may coordinate their actions with other individuals through a sufficiently complex language.
  51. Individuals may identify, store in memory, and change the environment to register symbols that translate as coordination procedures.
  52. New individuals, created from the interaction between two individuals of different genres of the same species, are not created fully mature. Their bodies are developed from a single cell up to a state of partial maturity while still attached to one parent’s body. After detachment, they are still unable to survive in the environment until full body development. During this time, they need constant interaction with parents for feeding and protection.

The entire architecture consists of two identities and four relations. Everything else — communication, persistent symbols, deliberate rules, harm, protection, developmental dependence — was shown to be composable from these primitives without requiring additional architectural structure.


The striking finding

The derived architecture supports representation of persistent symbolic communication, language, environmental records, deliberate interaction rules, coordination procedures, harm, protection, resource competition, reproduction, and intergenerational dependence.

And yet it does not require — as primitive or as necessary consequence:

  • Society as a collective identity
  • Law or normativity
  • Authority
  • Obligation, duty, or rights
  • Enforcement or adjudication
  • Property or ownership
  • Government, state, or sovereignty
  • Economy, market, or money

This is a boundary-specific finding, not a universal claim. Under these 52 observations and this goal, institutional structures are not architecturally necessary.
